RoadWX® data combines two critical modeling steps. The first is GWC’s best-in-the-world atmospheric forecast technology. The second is our RoadWeatherTM road physics model, which utilizes radiation transfer algorithms to compute road surface temperature using current weather and road state history as inputs. It is configured to account for road type, traffic volume, and winter treatment level. When available, connected vehicle data is used to modify and improve the forecast.
Accurately predicting road temperature is critical to forecasting road surface condition, making it possible to distinguish between snowfall melting on warm roads or accumulating on cold roads. GWC road temperature has been verified as accurate to ~1oC (1σ RMS) compared to road sensor observations.
